Q&A with Natalie Arsenow #CITYzen054

Hello dear friends! I am Ellen, student Business Translator-Interpreter at the UCLL in Leuven and since last month an intern at I LOVE Network. As you know, our NGO brings the hobbyists and freelancers in the creative sector together to promote the city and the local economy. With great pride we introduce our new CITYzen Natalie Arsenow. She creates beautiful drawings inspired from Old Masters and she takes photos from architecture and minimalism as well.

On the one hand, my inspiration comes from Old Masters and photographs depicting actresses on the other hand. …

How do you start drawing, Natalie?

I create drawings which people can enjoy for their aesthetic value and inherent beauty. However, I also love to inject a slight feminist touch. Therefore I draw portraits, usually depicting women only, because in my opinion it is high time to put women in the limelight and on a pedestal, where they belong after existing in obscurity for many centuries.

On the one hand, my inspiration comes from Old Masters and photographs depicting actresses on the other hand. I tend to choose famous portraits from the Renaissance and Baroque period and images of rather well-known actresses from the past and present. This is because the audience is oftentimes able to recognize them, which creates an immediate link between the artwork and the viewer.

What message do you want to bring to the locals?

Brussels is an open-minded, extremely international city. We accept all kinds of art and are becoming more and more important on the contemporary art market. Now we just have to promote female artists a lot more.

What is your wish for the future?

I would like to get a discussion going about the role and importance of collaboration, equality and how it is possible that in 2021 female artists are still as underrepresented, underpaid and undervalued as they are.

How can locals help you?

Let’s collaborate, give me a chance to have my voice heard, my ideas discussed and most importantly my art work showed in public.
